Join us in northern Wyoming for educational field workshops in
geology and paleontology, led by professional geoscientists.
GeoScience
Adventures, a public outreach organization comprising an instructional staff
of professional geoscientists, offers teacher workshops that carry both
recertification and graduate credits. These summer workshops are conducted as
a series of three-day short courses that explore the geological and paleontological
record of the Bighorn Basin and Big Horn Mountain in northern Wyoming. These
workshops are now conducted under the umbrella of the Bighorn Basin Geoscience Center, Inc., an approved 501
C3 non-profit corporation with museum and
offices in Greybull, Wyoming - See www.bbgeoscience.org
Workshop participants learn to read and interpret the
geological record of paleoenvironments, paleoclimate, ancient ecosystems, and mountain building events.
In addition, new techniques and concepts are taught that can be readily
adapted to various grade levels. Teachers taking the workshops for credit
must develop and submit a lesson-plan derived from their workshop experience.
Assessment of the program based on discovery-based exercises, post-workshops
evaluations, and anecdotal feedback indicate that participants substantially
increase their confidence and interest in teaching earth-science concepts. Professional recertification credits or college
credits available – see workshops .
Drs. Brett-Surman
and Farlow with Workshop Participants at the Red Canyon
Ranch Dinosaur Digsite Our educational workshops utilize the extensive
geological and dinosaur fossil resources of Shell Valley in Wyoming’s Bighorn
Basin, along with the nearby Big Horn Mountains, as “living classrooms” in
order to increase the participant’s knowledge of earth science. These workshops
will visit world-class dinosaur fossil-bearing localities with scientists who
have done extensive research on these deposits. The basin is home to no less
than four major dinosaur digsites, plus well over
1,000 documented ancient mammal and plant scientific collection sites. The majority of the field activities are conducted
near Shell, Wyoming, which is ideally located 15 miles east of Greybull,
Wyoming, 60 miles east of Cody, Wyoming, and is only a two hour drive from
the east entrance to Yellowstone National Park. We invite you to browse through this site to

Combining “Lifelong Learning” with an authentic “Real West Vacation” - Why
paleontologists call Shell Valley the “Real Jurassic Playground” - The multi-layered geology and
natural resources of Wyoming’s Bighorn Basin A vacation in the Bighorn Basin that includes one or more of
our workshops would allow you to pursue “Lifelong Learning” while enjoying
the area’s natural resources. Last Updated: January 23,2013 |
