Wyoming’s Bighorn Basin – GeoScientists Love it, So Will You!

For a Real Western Adventure, include a visit to

Shell Valley  in your Vacation Planning

We are located on US Highway 14, near Shell, Wyoming, on the closest and most scenic route from the Black Hills of South Dakota to Yellowstone National Park. Shell is just two miles from the east entrance to Shell Canyon and the magnificent Big Horn Mountains, a one-hour drive from Cody, Wyoming, and two hours from the east entrance to Yellowstone National Park.

Today’s visitors appreciate the varied terrain afforded by the proximity of Shell to the western slope of the Big Horn Mountains. This area remains one of the last vestiges of true cowboy country, where cowboys, horses, and ranch living remain a way of life.

Visitors can always find a place to relax and dine on Real Western food in our area, A visit here may bring you in touch with a Wyoming cowboy or a group of geoscientists and researchers from major universities who are taking a break from excavating Jurassic dinosaur bones.

Besides its natural beauty, the area is full of other pleasant surprises.

Today’s visitors to Shell Valley can choose from a variety of accommodations and activities to fit any budget, including RV campgrounds, bed & breakfasts, and modern guest ranches.

For “Western Hospitality” at its best, the newly remodeled Lodge at Trapper Creek, part of The Hideout at Flitner Ranch offers the ultimate western vacation. Hideout guests are afforded plenty of opportunities for riding with real Wyoming cowboys.

Campers appreciate the warm western hospitality offered at the Shell Camp Ground. Featuring full hook-ups, clean, heated restrooms/showers, and shady tent sites with electricity, this campground is a favorite among geoscientists and travelers who like the easy access to Shell Valley’s natural resources. See their website at ShellCampGround.com for reservations.
